As part of its community health initiative, Aarohi is currently implementing “Arogya” project, which aims at achieving long-term sustainability and security of community health by developing a viable, cost effective community health programme. Conceptualized in collaboration with Kassar Trust, an organization with 22 years presence in the Kumaon Region of Uttaranchal, the project involves 25 villages and is benefiting approximately 15,000 people from Nainital, Chamoli and Bageshwar districts. The focus is on preventive and promotive health care at the household and the community level along with development of referral service mechanism for curative services.
Objectives of the project are:

Empowering village health committees
Training of village health workers and midwives
Instituting community processes like participatory planning and creation of village health funds.
Evolving systems for timely referral with private and government health services
Developing a database related to essential Reproductive and Child Health activities to be accessed, analysed and used by the community

As part of this process, village health committees have been formed and Swasthya Karmis (Village Health Workers) have been nominated by the villages. The Swasthya Karmis are being intensively trained in mother and childcare, first aid of basic emergencies and common diseases. Village communities contribute regularly towards their Swasthya Kosh (Village Health Funds). The village health committees manages this fund to give a stipend to the health worker, buy drugs for the Village Health Centre and other administrative expenses.
With the assistance of the Foundation for Research in Health Systems, Ahmedabad, a detailed Health Management Information System has been developed to track the pregnant mothers, child growth and immunization, morbidity and mortality rates. Referral link with two local hospitals based at Almora is being well used. Simultaneously, health education for children from 30 schools, as well as the community, is ongoing to deal with common diseases, nutrition, sanitation and safe child birth.
