Grameen Himalayan Haat

The 12th Grameen Himalayan Haat, held in November, 2012, with the objective of promoting a spirit of cultural exchange, local entrepreneurship and festive fun among the people of rural Kumaon. A five day event organized every year after the grass cutting season, the Haat continues to be a major annual event in the local calendar and has come to represent a beacon of Kumaoni culture and spirit in the region.

On show were cultural performances by various professional groups, and the students of Aarohi Bal Sansar once again gave a memorable performance of Kumaoni& Garhwali folk dances and charmed the public hearts. A Children’s Film Festival was also organized as part of the Haat. It proved to be a fun way of introducing the children to quality entertainment. They simply loved it!

Business revolved around sale of a variety of products like hand knitted sweaters, scarves, socks and caps; hand woven natural dyed stoles and shawls; jams, pickles and honey; local grains, flour herbs and spices; apricot oil, scrubs and soaps; Aipan handicrafts, soft toys, solar lamps, etc. Jalebis, samosas and pakoris, momos, noodles, soft ice cream cones were a hit as always. A total of 10 organizations, 29 local artisans and small business owners put up stalls and sales touched a high of INR 3.71 lacs. The total footfall at the event was approximately 23,000.
